Kingman County Jail Overview

Kingman County Jail is operated by the Kingman County Sheriff's Office. The official sheriff detention pages, jail handbook, visitation page, and records policy all point to this single local jail rather than a separate county corrections department. The Kansas Sheriffs' Association lists Brent Wood as Kingman County Sheriff and Jail Administrator, with the office, sheriff, and jail-admin phone all routed through 620-532-5133.

The jail is an adult detention facility for pretrial custody, short local sentences, probation or parole holds, city arrests transferred to county custody, and some outside-agency housing. The handbook describes the mission as providing a safe, clean, sanitary facility for inmates awaiting court or serving a sentence. Classification separates males and females and, when space is available, violent and nonviolent offenders.

Kingman County Jail Capacity

The Kansas Sheriffs' Association lists Kingman County Jail size as 22 beds. The official Current Inmates roster displayed 12 inmates when inspected on June 13, 2026. Those two figures describe rated capacity and one current roster snapshot. They are not a formal annual average daily population or annual booking count.

The roster examples showed a practical mix of custody reasons, including local sheriff arrests, Kingman Police Department arrests, probation violations, failure to appear, serving short jail terms, and outside-agency housing. The roster does not publish a summary by charge level, sentence status, race, sex, or average length of stay.

Booking and Classification

On admission, the processing officer inventories clothing, personal property, valuables, and funds for safekeeping. The inmate signs an itemized receipt. Immigration identity documents such as passports and birth certificates are inventoried and then given to a deportation officer for placement in the A-file. The jail issues an orange shirt, orange pants, sandals, and basic hygiene items. Some approved personal items may be retained, such as limited underwear, white T-shirts, socks, prescription glasses, dentures, and an approved prosthetic device.

Classification occurs before general population. The handbook says staff consider current offense, past offenses, escapes, discipline, and violent incidents. Administrative detention can be used for medical observation, pending transfer or release, security risk, protective custody, or pending investigation or hearing of prohibited acts.
